The disease is often observed among young women. In Western Medicine, it is divided into primary dysmenorrhea and secondary dysmenorrhea: the primary dysmenorrhea or functional dysmenorrhea refers to the syndrome with no organic lesion in the reproductive organs; and the secondary dysmenorrhea refers to the dysmenorrhea caused by organic lesion in the reproductive organs. The disease is often related with local lesion in reproductive organs, mental factors, nerves factors and endocrine factors.
